The Dilemmas and Development Strategies Taiwanese Notebook ODM Faces- A Resource-Based Point of View

Under Moore's Law, laptops have become thinner and lighter. The development of cloud technology has led to the market transfer of some personal notebook PC to the tablet PC. Chairman of Acer Inc. Zhenrung Shi's smiling curve theory refers to the difference in the added value of the industry. This article is aimed to examine whether notebook ODMs have the opportunity to switch business strategies and shift their focus to areas of higher added value. we summarized several important propositions: 1. Lack of patents and differences in R&D (research & development) directions, causing ODMs turn to the key component suppliers. 2. Taiwanese notebook ODMs turn to brand manufacturers mainly due to the lack of basic market restrictions. 3. Marketing capabilities and channel resulting in ODMs turn to the branding company. 4. Functional computers to the niche market may be the factor of Taiwanese notebook makers turn to branding companies. 5. Enhancing manufacturing efficiency and reducing costs will be ODMs' important development strategy. The survey respondents all agreed that the best operating strategy for notebook ODMs is to maintain the current foundry status and enhance manufacturing efficiency. It is suggested to import industry 4.0 in future business strategy, or to create consumer electronic brands by subsidiaries to avoid competition with the notebook branding company market.
