The Effectiveness of Readers' Theater on Elementary School Students' English Reading Ability and Attitudes Towards Learning

Popis: | 107 Reading ability is regarded as the foundation of language learning. To achieve the best results in learning English, reading ability should be enhanced. Readers’ Theater has been pointed out in many studies to be an effective pedagogy, and it provides many opportunities for students groups to have repeated reading practice and active learning interaction in class. This study attempted to explore the effects of using Readers’ Theater in an elementary school English program to improve students’ English reading ability and attitudes towards learning. The participants were 51 fifth graders from an elementary school in Tainan City. The experimental group was taught by the integration of readers’ theater for 16 weeks. Four research instruments were used, which are the instructional materials, an English reading test, a questionnaire of attitudes towards English leaning, and a questionnaire of students’ responses to Readers’ Theater. Three major findings of the study were as following: 1. The use of Readers’ Theater in an elementary school English program improved the students’ English reading ability. 2. The use of Readers’ Theater in an elementary school English program did not enhance the students’ attitudes towards English learning. 3. Positive responses were displayed to the use of Readers’ Theater in an elementary school English program. Finally, some pedagogical implications were offered for the future researches. |
