A Study on the Relationship among Personalities, Travel Motivations, and Overseas Travel Behaviors of Teachers in Junior High Schools : A Case of a Public Junior High School in Taoyuan City

Junior high school teachers have stable incomes and overseas travels are available for them during their summer and winter vacations. Therefore, they possess an important position in the overseas tourist market. This study is to explore the relationship among personalities, travel motivations, and overseas travel behaviors of the teachers in one junior high school in Taoyuan City. Study data is obtained from a questionnaire using an overall sampling method. A total of 172 questionnaires are distributed, but only 170 questionnaires are valid. After coding data, descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, validity analysis, factor analysis, independent sampling t-test, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc comparison using the Scheffe method or LSD method are adopted to analyze the questionnaire data. The analyzed results are listed as follow: 1.Teachers’ personalities in a certain junior high school are ranked in order of five aspects as “Conscientiousness”, “Agreeableness”, “Openness to Experience”, “Extraversion” and “Emotional Control” according to their average scores. The item sequence is "I will try my best to do everything," "I am considerate," "I am trustworthy," "I am agreeable," and "I am willing to help others," according to their average scores. 2.Teachers’ travel motivations in a certain junior high school are ranked in order of five aspects as “Exotic Experiential Fun”, “Relief and Relaxation”, “Sharing and Innovation”, “Status and Prestige” and “Interpersonal Interaction and Growth” according to their average scores. The item sequence is "I can experience different natural beauty," "I can experience the local novelties," "I deserve to enjoy the fun of playing," "I can taste local specialties," "I can visit local famous historical and cultural museums.” 3.In the analysis of different background variables, there are significant differences in some personality factor aspects with different genders, ages, education levels, marital status, presence or absence of children, and average family monthly incomes; however, there is no significant difference in personality factor aspects with different teacher qualifications and current positions. 4.In the analysis of different background variables, there are significant differences in some travel motivation factor aspects with different ages, education levels, marital status, and presence or absence of children; hwever, there is no significant difference in travel motivation factor aspects with different genders, teacher qualifications, current positions, and average family monthly incomes. 5.In the analysis of different travel behavior variables, there are significant differences in some personality factor aspects with different travel days, individual average travel costs, major travel companions, and travel decision makers. 6.In the analysis of different travel behavior variables, there are significant differences in some travel motivation factor aspects with different individual average travel costs, main travel companions, main type of travel activities, and intention to participate in overseas travel in the next year. Based on the results of the study, recommendations are made as a reference for junior high school teachers, educational administrations, relative travel agencies, and future researchers.
