The purpose of this study is to examine the antecedents and the effects of consumer trust on consumers’ willingness to adopt mobile payment. We first examine the antecedents of consumer trust in a mobile payment context, i.e. how the characteristics of vendors (reputation of vendors and opportunism of vendors) and mobile technology (structural assurance and environmental risk) affect consumer trust; and how to consumer trust influences their willingness to adopt mobile payment. Data were gathered from 191 valid questionnaires collected in Taiwan. Multiple regression was employed for data analysis. Statistical results showed that consumer trust is significantly determined by opportunism of vendors, structural assurance and environmental risk while reputation of vendors does not have significant effects on consumer trust. To be specific, structural assurance has positive effects on consumer trust. Opportunism of vendors and environmental risk negatively affect consumer trust. Besides, consumer trust also has a positive and significant effect on the willingness to adopt mobile payment. Moreover, consumer trust has mediating effects between the four antecedents and consumers’ willingness to adopt mobile payment. In other words, the four antecedents cannot directly affect the willingness to adopt mobile payment without consumer trust.
