Áskell Másson (1953-), one of the century’s most representative contemporary composers from Iceland, has made significant contributions to music. He has successfully ventured into various genres, including solo works, chamber music, choral music, orchestral pieces, or even operas. His diverse creative expressions as a contemporary composer are best manifest in his compositions for percussion. For example, his works for the snare drum, which include a concerto, a duet, and three solo pieces for the instrument, occupy a seminal place in the percussion repertoire. Másson’s Prim (1984), the focus of the present thesis, is the first snare drum solo penned by the composer, which was inspired by the concept of prime number in mathematics .The thesis approaches the work from three perspectives—the composer, the history, and the work per se—namely, the composer’s life, the historical evolution of the snare drum, and the analysis and interpretation of piece. Through discussing and analyzing Másson’s Prim, the thesis aims to provide some direction of interpretation and point of reference for percussionists at home and abroad based on the composer’s core creative philosophy.
