Definition and Attitudes towards Extramarital Affairs in Taiwan: The Effects of Parents' Marital Relationships

The purpose of this study was to examine the definition and attitudes towards extramarital affairs in Taiwan, and the effects of parents’ marital relationships. The analyzed sample from online-survey consists of 553 adults, aged above 20. The results indicated that first, adults in Taiwan tended to have conservative attitude of towards extramarital affairs. Secondly, men were with more open-minded attitude towards extramarital affairs than women. There was low positive and significant correlation between the number of times falling in love and the attitude towards extramarital affairs. Moreover, the adults who had an affair with others were with more open-minded attitude towards extramarital affairs than who did not. Thirdly, there were no association between the marital status of their parent and the adult children’ attitudes towards extramarital affairs. Also, there were no association between their parents had extramarital affairs or not and adult children’ attitudes towards extramarital affairs. However, adult children who experienced high-level parent conflict of marriage were with more open-minded attitude towards extramarital affairs. Furthermore, parent conflict of marriage showed a moderating effect of parent’ extramarital affairs and adult children’ attitudes towards extramarital affairs. Results also suggested that adults in Taiwan defined ‘sex interactions’ as extramarital affairs. Secondly, women were more easily define behavior as extramarital affairs than men. The adults who had have not an affair with others easily define ‘friends interactions’ as extramarital affairs, but there was nonsignificant correlation between the number of times falling in love and the definition of extramarital affairs. Finally, there were no association between their parents had extramarital affairs or not and adult children’ definition of extramarital affairs. Also, there were no association between parent conflict of marriage and adult children’ definition of extramarital affairs; nonetheless, adult children whose parents were in marriage were more easily define ‘ambiguous interactions’ as extramarital affairs.
