This paper describes the design and analysis of a permanent magnet brushless motor for electric assisted bicycles to satisfy the specification for the European standard EN15194. First, two slot-pole combinations of motors are chosen, the finite element analysis (FEA) software, Flux 2D has been used to analyze the motors performance, such as, cogging torque, back electromotive force, torque and efficiency. Then the slot-pole combination that has the better performance is chosen for the following analysis. To minimize both the usage of magnets and torque ripple, the sensitivity analysis, Taguchi methed and fuzzy Taguchi method is applied, while still meeting the specifications of the motor.
