'Implanted Local Awareness' in Common Texbooks during Japanese Colonial Period of Taiwan

The purpose of this study is to research the local awareness in the third edition of the common textbooks of Japanese school during Japanese Colonial Period of Taiwan. Is those local textbooks serve as a tool for the colonial government to distrubt political needs ? Or throuth the related life experience to cultivate students' local awareness ? The context of history can’t be denied and the influence of contemporary special circumstances. Therefore, this research hope though analysis Mandarin common textbooks as the key basis for future local education and find out the form process of “Taiwan identity”. This research object is selected from the common textbook of the public school in the Japanese colonial period of Taiwan. The research scope is from 1933’s Mandarian common textbooks to 1936. The literature analysis method is used to third edition of the public school Mandarian textbooks, education regulations, school system and related laws and regulations were analyzed. The collected data discussed from the perspective of local consciousness and inspect influence of colonial education on the local culture and of the colonial people, and the different aspects of primary education in the Japanese colonial period of Taiwan. The conclusions and recommendations of this study are as follows: First, the local awareness in the textbooks (1) Paying attention to local textbooks; (2) Presenting the appearance of universal Taiwanese life; (3) Lack of historical emotions; (4) Japaneseization. Second, the recommendations of local education (1) Close to the life experience of students; (2) The actual operation of social movements; (3) The construction of the historical spirit; (4) Understanding of human geography.
