A Study of Textile Industry in Vietnam

| Popis: | 106 After 20 years of development, the Vietnamese textile industry has achieved an annual growth rate of 15%. It has become an important economic sector in Vietnam with annual export volume accounts for 10-15% of total exports. The main reason for this might be that Vietnam has ample labor resources and also low labor costs, which is conducive to the development of a garment and textile industry. In the past, Vietnam was the world’s fifth largest exporter of textiles and is striving to be in the top 3 exporters in the coming years, with major export markets in the United States, Europe and Japan. However, there are still many unfavorable factors affecting the future development of the textile industry in Vietnam. This study mainly discusses these adverse factors in order to understand the future direction of Vietnam's textile industry. The main findings are as follows: The influence of Vietnam's textile FDI on the export of textiles is favourable since more FDI in Vietnam's textile sector associated with higher export volume. The average population also has a positive impact on the textile exports, which can be explained by the fact that an increase in population would mean more labor and lead to higher textile export volume. On the other hand, increased per capita GDP on textile exports gives rise to an early decrease in textile exports followed by a later increase. This might be because during the early development of the textile industry, the increased per capita GDP caused the wage costs to increase, resulting in reduced textile exports. However, with the improvement of labor technology, textile exports would gradually increase. Therefore, in the future, Vietnam textile industry must focus on improving its competitiveness and production efficiency, enhancing labour training in order to reduce the impact of the annual wage growth, attract more foreign investors and promote the export of Vietnam's textile industry. |
