To explore the effect of organizational intervention on quality of life in patients with polypharmacy

Popis: | 106 Background: The prevalence of polypharmacy in Taiwan has increased due to aging and increased population of multiple chronic diseases. In responding to this situation, government agency and medical institutions have stepped in to improve the safety and quality of medications. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the influence of system wide intervention for polypharmacy on quality of life of polymedicated patients. Materials and Methods: This sample was taken from a project initiated in a medical center in northern Taiwan for the purpose of appropriateness of medication prescription from November 2013 to February 2015. Patients who took more than 800 pills in 28 days were screened by a medication reminder information system were collected for this study. Patients were divided into drug reduction group and drug maintenance group according to the change of drug burden index. A medication-related, quality of life scale was used to measure the difference in the quality of life between the two groups. Results: As expected, the results showed that the medication-related quality of life scores of the drug reduction group were significantly improved more than the maintenance in terms of vitality and social function. Conclusion: The drug intervention group showed significant improvement in the vitality and social function facet of the quality of life The reminder information system help to remind the doctors to review vi patients prescriptions, which will result in quality of life among polymedicated patients. |
