The Analytical Method Development and Application of Twelve Preservatives in Cosmetics with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

Preservative are also widely added to products such as foods, medicine and cosmetics, which can prevent decomposition by microbial growth and extend shelf life.or by undesirable chemical changes. However, excessive preservatives may cause skin allergies or discomfort. Twelve preservatives(Benzoic acid, salicylic acid, 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid, sorbic acid, dehydroacetic acid, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isopropylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben and sec-butylparaben)in Taiwan Food and Drug Administration(TFDA)zmethod of test for preservatives in cosmetic, were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode(HPLC-PDA). Method validation was performed with three cosmetic matrixes (liquid, gel, emulsions). The results showed that this method could effectively separate twelve preservatives without matrix interference. The limit of quantifitcation could achieve reach 0.25~ to 1 μg/mL and R2 > 0.99 showed good linearity. The accuracy of acid preservatives and ester preservatives were 83.9~115.1% and 86.4~110.9%. The precision of acid preservatives and ester preservatives were 0.2~8.7% and 0.4~13.8%. All results met the validation criteria of TFDA chemical testing methods.
