Popis: | 105 When Taiwan was under Japanese rule between 1895 and 1945, many Japanese-style dormitories were built. After the departure of the Japanese, the new government did not pay attention to these wooden dormitories. Besides, Taiwan's warm and wet weather is harmful to wooden object, so many buildings rotted away. Before 1982, there was no law to protect this heritage, resulting in many irrecoverable losses. Since then, some places have been protected by law but many dormitories are still ignored, legally demolished by their owners or destroyed by fire. Japanese wooden dormitories are a part of Taiwan's cultural heritage and it is important to protect them. To address the problematic adequately, a proper understanding of the situation in all its complexity is critical. The main objectives of the thesis are focused on three targets. The first one is to understand the situation of Japanese style dormitories in Taiwan. The second one is to study the relation between people (occupants or not) and dormitories. The last one is to propose some ideas to keep and protect them. In this study, we visited eight areas of Taiwan and interviewed ten individuals (professionals, residents, and new users) to help us understand the situation of the dormitories and the opinions and ideas about them. Four main observations conclude the thesis. The first one is that the data reported by the government about dormitories are often obsolete and does not offer a complete view of the situation. The second one is that people pay little attention to dormitories even though they say they like them. The third one is that the function of Japanese style dormitories are often changed to accommodate the new uses and that it cause a partial loss of the original spirit of these historical buildings. The last one is that most dormitories are transformed in stores or coffee shops and that more ideas are needed. Finally, we make a few suggestions to improve management of the dormitories and public awareness about their value. |
