The Study of Leisure Constraints and Negotiation in Middle-Aged and Elderly People

There has been a significant trend of elderly society in Taiwan. People who desire well-being need possessing essential elements such as physical, mind, social, and spiritual health. The important factors for elderly adults to be successful aging are knowing the leisure constraints and negotiations. The purpose of this study is to understand what kind of leisure constraints for middle-aged and elderly people and how they negotiate with them. The quality research method was selected. There were 11 middle-aged and elderly adults agreed participating in the study including 8 males and 3 females, the range was 50 to 89 years old. A question framework was developed by experts for the semi-structural interview with these participants. All interviews are permitted to record and then type them to be documents. Researcher analyze related documents and research notes in order to find if potential factors exiting behind their words. The results as follows: 1. The assessment of self-health-perception is 76 average score. The average score of self life- satisfaction is 78. 2. The content analysis of interview demonstrates that four factors are determinater for successful aging: physical, mind, social, and spiritual. Their distribution is 22% to 29%. 3. Causing to the district of sampling around middle and south areas in Taiwan, the structural barriers for participants are not significant. Nevertheless, there presents a little of intrapersonal berries and more interpersonal barriers. 4. The core component for leisure negotiation is the concept of interpersonal barrier among these middle-aged and elderly adults. In addition, the altruism is the key point for which they will negotiate with barriers or not. 5. The most important motivation for maintain participating in leisure activity is their life-faith and spirituality. These two elements serve them as courage to overcome varying constraints even they are uncomfortable, no social support, or unsuitable exercise place. The results demonstrate that the leisure constraints in Taiwan’s society differ from the description of Hierarchical Theory. The relationship of family members and the notion of causality in life make elderly adults every decision. Besides, the altruism and spirituality are the chief reasons to negotiate with leisure barriers. The less important factors are social support, positive faith, and individual health.
