Popis: | 105 Most patients with vestibular dysfunction experience dizziness, imbalance, and poor stability. Their daily activities and physiological and psychological states are affected by the dysfunction. When these patients begin to move or walk, the coordination between the direction of their head and changes in the direction they are walking may cause dizziness, imbalance, and fall. The four square step test (FSST) and the timed up and go test are widely used to examine vestibular function. Since FSST does not involve as many as vestibular factors, this pilot study aimed to determine the validity of modified four square step test (M-FSST) in assessing vestibular problems or for a better prediction of the impact of vestibular problems on daily activities. We enrolled 80 patients with dizziness (aged 20–75 years) for this study from the Department of Neurology, Taipei Veterans General Hospital. Before assessment, patients were asked to fill out instruments, including basic information, past medical history, and the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI). Results revealed that patients with abnormal caloric test results required a little longer time to complete the M-FSST. Furthermore, there were correlations between the M-FSST and the caloric test (r = .402, p < .05), as well as the DHI (r = .419, p < .01). The findings of this study showed that M-FSST was associated with the caloric test results, as well as with functional, physiological, and emotional disabilities in patients with vestibular dysfunction. |
