Action Research of Using Montessori Education in Children Art Creation

This research action’s topic is, “How to use Montessori teaching methods to further foster children’s art creation” and its objective is to explore what materials can be incorporated into art creation. The researcher observed the effect of combining Montessori and art creation methods during Montessori Art Creation lessons in Taichung Private Mei-Mei Kindergarten within a three month period. The subjects, who were children aged 3 – 6 years of age and divided into two mixed-age classes, were observed in both quantitative and qualitative ways. The applications used in analysis were as follows: Observation Checklist of Children’s Attitude in Art Creation, Survey Form of Children’s Learning Attitude, Checklist of Teaching Activities in the Aesthetic Field, Teacher’s Checklist of Teaching Activities in the Aesthetic Field, Record of Interview about Children’s Artwork, Teaching Activity Journal, Teacher’s Reflection Journal, etc. Research results showed that first, Montessori education can help foster children’s art creation; second, combining themed lessons and Montessori education can enhance children’s cognition and skills in the aesthetic field; third, the well-prepared environment of Montessori education can help children better perform in making art; fourth, children’s expressions in their artwork were varied due to their ages. The specific suggestions, according to reasearch results, can serve as a future reference for Montessori teachers, general teachers and other researchers who are also attempting to foster children’s art creation.
