Energy saving analysis of refrigerant optimization in an air-cooled chiller

This study aims to analyze the energy saving effect of a small capacity air-cooled chiller using refrigerant optimization devices. A regression analysis method is adopted to simulate the coefficient of performance (COP). Thus, the COP model for an air-cooled chiller installed without a refrigerant optimization unit could be established and the data of an air-cooled chiller installed with a refrigerant optimization unit collected respectively. The COP established acts as a baseline model for us to attain the COP of the chiller installed with a refrigerant optimization unit. Then, the simulated results are compared to evaluate the efficiency of these two operation kinds of an air-cooled chiller. The major test subject of this study is a small capacity air-cooled chiller with double-scroll compressors. Various operational statuses of an air-cooled chiller with single-scroll compressor or double-scroll compressors are simulated and compared in this study. The results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of the chiller with a single-scroll compressor is increased by 4.45% on average and the actual power consumption of it is cut down by 4.20%, while that with double-scroll compressors is 7.97% and 7.27%. Therefore, adopting refrigerant optimization devices can slow the aging process of refrigerant and eliminate vacuum bubbles to optimize the efficacy of refrigerants and improve the COP of chiller for the purpose of energy-saving.
