Exploring Family Experiences of Females Who Have a Child with Disability

The purpose of this study is to explore the family experiences of females who have a child with disability. Through purposive sampling, three mothers were invited to participate in three individual in-depth interviews. A semi-structured interview guide was developed by the researcher to facilitate the interview process. All interviews were transcribed and analyzed until themes of three females’ life stories were emerged. Research findings highlighted the role experiences of three participating females of children with disabilities were mother, daughter-in-law, working woman, parent, wife, other family role, and other non-family related social role in descending order of importance. There were four types of role conflicts experienced by them because of their multiple roles, including (1) being a mother and a wife, (2) being a working woman and a family member, (3) being a wife and a daughter-in-law, and (4) transition from being a girlfriend to a daughter-in-law. Facilitating factors to resilience used by mothers of children with disability included (1) achieving independence and separation by moving out of their parents-in-law’s house, (2) family support, (3) their life goals and beliefs, (3) stepping out of their social roles to have their personal space and time, (4) social support, (5) services provided by government and social welfare agencies, and (6) other factors such as counseling services and religious practices. Based on research findings, further research as well as implications for professional practice are delineated.
