This study uses data collected by the Center of Higher Education Research in National Tsing Hua University in 2005. The data are employed to investigate whether the family background and area of students’ residence affect the performance of the college entrance exam.Eight variables, including gender, graduation high school, family income, father’s education level, mother’s education level, father’s occupation, mother’s occupation, and residence are used to represent family background. The empirical results show that gender is not significant, while students in elite high school or living in Taipei City and New Taipei City perform better on entrance exam. Family income has a positive impact on the performance of the entrance exam, but the highest income category does not have a highest impact. If the family income is higher than a certain degree, then income effect disappears. The higher of father’s education level or mother’s education level, the better their children’s performance on the entrance exam. However, influences of mother’s education are more substantial than father’s. Finally, children of military parents perform worse than their counterparts.
