The essential oils from plant have been confirmed including anti-free radicals, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. Lamiaceae plants generally contain volatile aromatic oils that can be extracted as flavors, medicinal or cooking spices. Seven common Lamiaceae plants in Taiwan, including Hyssopus officinalis., Mentha citrata, Mentha × piperita, Origanum vulgare., Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth, Rosmarinus officinalis ct verbenone, and Thymus vulgaris ct thujanol, have been studied. The essential oils of above plants were extracted by CO2 supercritical fluid extraction method, and the components of these essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometer. The antioxidant capacity, antibacterial ability and minimum antibacterial concentration of essential oil were also tested. Finally, the stability and irritation of seven essential oils were applied in cosmetics for assessment. The main component of these essential oils was 43.10% of 3-pinanone in Hyssopus officinalis, 46.95% of linalool in Mentha citrata, 40.53% of menthone in Mentha × piperita, 77.09% of thymol in Origanum vulgare, 44.81% of patchoulol in Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth, 51.56% of 1R-α-pinene in Rosmarinus officinalis ct verbenone, and 63.48% of 4-thujanol in Thymus vulgaris ct thujanol, respectively. In the antioxidant and antibacterial tests, overall the best performance among these essential oils is Origanum vulgare. The total phenol content and total antioxidant activity of this plant are 1665.36 μg of GAE/mg relative to the content of gallic acid and 4023.49 μg of trolox/mg relative to the content of trolox, respectively. The DPPH free radicals scavenging ability, reducing capacity, ferric thiocyanate test, β-carotene decolorization determination, and removal of hydrogen oxide free radicals of this essential oils were also investigated. The results were 59.20%, 53.03%, 29.17%, 88.26% and 18.77%, respectively. In the antibacterial test, Origanum vulgare has inhibitory effects for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pityrosporum ovale, and Propionibacterium acne. Seven species of Lamiaceae essential oils were applied in eleven kinds of cosmetics for stability evaluation. It was confirmed that they have good stability by passing abuse experiments. After obtaining the human test approval letter 30 volunteers were recruited for human trial. The result have shown that no any skin discomfort, in addition, the body cream-5 can reduce 30.73% of the skin red pigment, facial cream can reduce 7.29% of skin melanin, and body milk can enhance 34.29% of skin water content. To sum up, the application of essential oils have a good development potential in cosmetic products.
