The Tenants Downstairs, which first premiered on August 12th, 2016, is an R-rated move that encompasses a score of elements, ranging from mystery and reasoning to horror, lust, homosexuality, violence, gore, torture, and murder. The film bravely ventures into a genre that most Taiwanese filmmakers would consider faux pas, and has greatly exceeded the expectations of its audience. While the film itself received polarizing reviews, its box office numbers did not lie. Bringing in over NTD140 million in box office sales, the movie excelled as the highest-grossing Taiwanese film in Taipei in 2016, as well as one of only two Taiwanese movies to break the NTD100 million barrier in box office sales that year. The film has served as a pioneer for its genre in Taiwanese film, and has even built an appetite for similar genres among audiences in Taiwan. Besides its outstanding box office results, The Tenants Downstairs also received awards, nominations and recognition at the Golden Horse Film Festival, the Taipei Film Festival, and five other significant international film festivals. The Taiwanese film sector is traditionally dominated by genres such as teen, romance, and campus films. However, The Tenants Downstairs was created with the intention of reshaping the landscape of Taiwanese film. Through meticulous and complete preparation, marketing, pre-production, shooting, visual special effects, music scores, post-production, and distribution, the film, which was initially transcribed from a novel, proved that even an R-rated film could achieve prodigious results in the box office. As the Director of The Tenants Downstairs, I hope to share my thoughts, ideas, logic, research, and records from my work on the film in the past four years with my peers in the Motion Picture Department. As well, I hope my experiences and lessons in this film can be a stepping stone to allow me to improve my craft in the future.
