An Action Research on Differentiated Teaching of Phonetic Symbols for Freshman

This study aims to explore the differentiated teaching of phonetic symbols for the freshman, hoping to solve the problem that single teaching approach fails to achieve the teaching effects due to the great differences between the first graders in the ability of phonetic symbols. The research studies the first graders and the instructor while adopting the research method of action research. The students were divided into Low, Medium and High achiever groups according to their ability of phonetic symbols and differentiated teaching was applied in large class with assignments and learning objectives in the different difficulty levels. The teaching process was constantly modifiedt address the inapplicability, presenting the course of differentiated teaching approach developed for the teaching of phonetic symbols. The positive learning performances of the Low, Medium and High achiever groups differ from each other, which leads to the following suggestions: 1) The differentiated teaching approach can be applied in the teaching of Chinese phonetic symbols; 2) The follow-up researchers can carry out related researches on differentiated teaching from the aspect of faculty corporation mode.
