The Effects of English Children's Poetry Instruction on Taiwan 6th Graders Vocabulary Learning

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of using English Children’s poetry instruction in English vocabulary learning. Two classes of 55 sixth graders at New Taipei City elementary school participated in this study. One class was the experimental group; the other was the control group.The experimental group received English Children’s poetry instruction for English vocabulary learning and the control group received phonics teaching in English vocabulary learning. The experiment lasted for 4 weeks. Participating students received the instruction for 20 minutes each time and two times a week. The total time of instruction was 160 minutes. Quantitative method was mainly used in this study. Pre- and post-tests were employed to collect the data. Independent Sample t test and Paired Sample t test were conducted to analyze the data.In addition to the overall test results, three aspects of vocabulary learning were taken into account. They were sound-form identification, meaning-form identification, and word soundout. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the experimental group and control group on the posttest.There was a significant difference between the pre- and post-tests for the control group as well as the experimental group. In addition, the difference between the experimental group and control groups was significant in the aspects of sound-form identification and meaning-form identification. For both groups, there were significant differences between the pre- and post-tests in the aspects of meaning-form identification and word soundout. Based on the results of the study, the researcher offers some suggestions for the directions of the related research in the future.
