The purpose of this research is to explore the impact of student IQ and Family Cultural Capital on academic achievement. The subjects of this study are sixth grade students at the primary school in Hsinchu City. A total of 195 parent permission forms were sent home and 103 parent permission forms were returned. Family Cultural Capital Questionnaire copies and a second permission form requesting access to TASA and IQ scores were then sent to these respondees, of which 74 sets were returned. The questionnaire data were analyzed by reliability analysis, factor analysis, Descriptive Statistcs, ANOVA, stepwise regression analysis, and path analysis. The research results are as follows: 1. The sixth grade students at this Hsinchu City primary school scored at the middle level for perception of Family Cultural Capital, and at the highest level for the “objectified state” dimension. 2. The varied backgrounds of the sixth grade students resulted in significant differences in the three dimensions of Family Cultural Capital. 3. There was significant correlation between family background and academic achievement. 4. The objectified state of Family Cultural Capital predicted academic achievement in math and English. 5. Family background of living with both parents and Father's occupation status predicted certain areas of academic achievement. 6. A student’s IQ had the ability to predict his academic achievement. 7. A student’s IQ, the “objectified state” dimension of Family Cultural Capital, living with both parents, and Father's occupation status partly predicted scores in Chinese, Math, and English. Finally, based on the research results listed above, suggestions for teachers, parents, and future studies are proposed.
