A Study of the Relationship Between Role Perception, Career Development Readiness and Career Adaptability of Elementary School Counselors

The main purpose of this research was to explore the relationships among role perception, career development readiness and career adaptability of elementary school counselors. The research objects were the counselors who teach in elementary schools in different cities and counties in Taiwan; based on purposive sampling, there were 229 valid samples selected for this study from the counselors. The methodology of this research included role perception scale, career development readiness scale and career adaptability scale. The surveyed information has been analyzed by descriptive statistics, MANOVA, Pearson correlation, typical correlation and multivariate stepwise regression, and the results were: 1. The overall score of role perception scale at all levels was above average. 2. The overall score of career development readiness scale at all levels was above average; while the significant score difference was caused by age differences. 3. The overall score of career adaptability scale at all levels was above average. 4. There was a significant positive correlation between career development readiness and role perception; the three X variables in career readiness could explain 22%, 5% and 4% of the six Y variables in role perception through three sets of the typical factors. 5. There was a significant positive correlation between role perception and career adaptability; the six X variables in role perception could explain 27% of the two Y variables in career adaptability through one set of the typical factors. 6. There was a significant positive correlation between career development readiness and career adaptability; the three X variables in career readiness could explain 22% of the two Y variables in career adaptability through one set of the typical factors. 7. The role of direct service, the attitude of career development, the collection of decisions and the role of resource utilization and teamwork of elementary school counselors could effectively predict career adaptability, and the amount of explained variance could achieve to 34.3%. Moreover, "the role of direct service" could provide the most effective prediction to career adaptability. The suggestions of this study were based on its conclusions which can be used for practical utilization for future research and reference.
