A Study on contemporary poetry of Wu-Sheng

Popis: | 105 Since 1972, a suite of poems titled “My Village” earned him great fame in modern poetry, Wu-Sheng has been paid close attention to the land for almost half a century. Known as “rural poet”, Wu-Sheng not only sticks to his literary concerns with a realistic perspective, but also takes action to plant trees for environmental protection. The mutual influences between his moral belief, writing style, and social practice all make Wu-Sheng a unique writer among his contemporaries. Therefore, the study examined Wu-Sheng and a wide range of his modern poems, adopting textual analysis, writer’s interviews and even intertextuality between prose and verse as research methods. Furthermore, it also analyzed Wu-Sheng’s work with different approaches such as land ethic, Gaia hypothesis, and New Taoism. The main subject of this study can be divided into four chapters. First, Wu-Sheng’s literary family and social involvements will be elaborated by which Wu-Sheng’s enthusiasm for the hometown and family can we discover the fundamental key in his writing. Second, it dealt with three themes of “pastoral picture”, “ecosystem” and “life” seriatim in Wu-Sheng’s modern poems, pointing out the great combination of Confucianism and Taoism that Wu-Sheng kept showing. Third, a further discussion on the recurring images of “soil”, “water” and “wood” demonstrated the poet’s inner world which in a way can be considered a Taoist. Finally, it summed up the core spirit and artistic characteristics of Wu-Sheng’s work and explored his uniqueness in the development of Taiwan’s modern poetry. |
