Exploring the Relations between Service-Learning Experience , Service-Learning Engagement and Modern Citizen Core Literacy of the Middle School Students

The purpose of this study was to design a literacy assessment with well reliability and validity for Modern Citizen Core Litiracy to middle school students, this study also explores the effects of service-learning experience and service-learning engagement on Modern Citizen Core Litaracy. Modern Citizen Core Litaracy Test is based on the core competency index for higher education assessment, as well as the evaluation structure of the International Civic Education and Literacy Survey, conducted by the International Association for Educational Achievement Assessment (Chen,2012) .The test breaks down bidirectionally and designed to reflect the limited life experience of middle school students, including cognitive items and affective items. Items revised by the experts who were working in middle schools. In addition, because of the importence to explore service-learning engagement, the scale of service-learning engagement revised from learning engagement scales to junior high school students in English class situation (Chen,2014), It contained four main stages for service-learning task, that is preparation, service, reflection, recognition and affirmation (celebration). Modern Citizen Core Litaracy Test and Service-Learning Engagement Scale had been verification in pilot study. Middle school students in Taiwan who were chosen as participants on the rules of stratified purposive sampling. The total number of valid examinees is 1,561. The data was analysized by Multi-dimensional item response theory by Parcial Credit Model and Rating Scale Model. The result indicated (1) The Modern Citizen Core Litaracy Test developed in this study has good reliability and validity. (2)The Service-Learning Engagement Scale revised in this study has good reliability and validity. (3)There were not all significant effect on service-learning engagement in the predit of Modern Citizen Core Litaracy. (4) Behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, agentic engagement and cognitive engagement had significant effect on moral literacy, democracy literacy, sciencec literacy, media literacy and aesthetic literacy. (5) Behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, agentic engagement and cognitive engagement had different predit ways on moral literacy, democracy literacy, sciencec literacy, media literacy and aesthetic literacy.
