Emerging contaminants include broad chemicals. Some of them are pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). PPCPs are degraded with difficulty in sewage treatment systems. Thus, PPCPs can be detected in the environment easily and causing environmental pollution. Advanced oxidation process (AOPs) is a kind of oxidation treatment which is often used to treat the organic pollutants, such as persulfate and Fenton process. They can be activated by light, heat, electricity, transition metals, ultrasound and others. The aim of this research was to investigate the oxidative degradation of SMX and ACE by AOPs common in use, which are Electro-H2O2, Electro-SPS, Electro-Fenton and Electro-Fenton-SPS. In order to investigate the effects on ACE and SMX degradation efficiency, and to find the optimum operating condition, concentrations of SPS, hydrogen peroxide and ferrous ions are the main parameters under consideration. The results indicated that the Electro-Fenton-SPS process has the complete degradation of ACE and SMX. The removal rate of ACE reached 100% in 20 mins by adding 0.05 mM of Fe2+, 10 mM of SPS and air flow of 1.0 NL/min at pH 3. And the removal rate of SMX reached 100% in 90 mins. Electro Fenton process is also effective for the removal of SMX and ACE in 3 hours (100%). However, the results of the other programs show that under Electro-H2O2 process, the removal rate of ACE was 36.3% and SMX was 34.7% after 180 min. In the case of Electro-SPS process, the removal rate of ACE was 51.03% and SMX was 68.97% after 180 min. As the result, Electro-Fenton-SPS system can effectively increase the rate of reaction and achieve complete removal.
