Error analysis of Chinese character--Comparison between Mandarin as L1 learners and Mandarin as L2 learners

Recently, the upsurge of learning Chinese is growing day by day, and in the neighboring countries of Taiwan like Vietnam, Chinese is becoming an important second language to learn for commercial or job purposes. However, for Vietnamese learners who use the alphabet writing system, it is a great difficulty to learn Chinese reading and writing due to the unique and complex strokes of Chinese character. Learning Chinese character is also a tough task for elementary-school children, whose mother tongue is Mandarin. Hence, in view of this, this study attempts to make an error analysis of Chinese character and a comparison between young learners who learn Mandarin as their mother tongue and L2 learners of Mandarin. The results demonstrate commonness as well as differences between these two groups of learners. Concerning the common findings, most errors involve component or pronunciation relation between the target character and the error. The proportion of component replacement errors is higher than that of pronunciation-related errors and among the component-related errors, partial replacement of the target character with another similar writing component contributes to the most errors. The major difference between these two groups of learners lies on the proportion of complete character replacement. The errors of the child learners who are native Mandarin speakers mainly involve character replacement, i.e. replacing the target character with another existing Chinese character. The replacements are usually homophones of the target characters. Different from young native speakers, the errors of the Vietnamese learners mainly display partial component replacement or omission of strokes of the target Chinese character. According to the results and findings of this research, the researcher puts forward some common suggestions of teaching Chinese character to mother-tongue students and foreign Mandarin learners, including the use of word and sentence teaching method; supplement to teaching materials, and the use of word-family literacy. For the teaching of foreign learners, it is suggested that teachers should focus on the teaching of basic strokes and stroke order when teaching basic-level learners, use the "whole word → parts → whole word" teaching method; memorize the word by pronunciation, and the beginning learners could practice the Chinese character with the Tian-format worksheet used by the elementary-school students in Taiwan. For mother-tongue young learners: it is suggested that lots of reading and more composition writing will benefit their learning of Chinese character. In addition, the mass media should also take social responsibility for the Chinese orthography.
