A Study on Learning Motivation and Learning Satisfaction of Aboriginal Student-Athletes in Aboriginal Senior High Schools

Popis: | 105 The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences and relationships between learning motivation and learning satisfaction of aboriginal student-athletes with various backgrounds in aboriginal senior high schools. By understanding aboriginal student-athletes’ learning motivation and learning satisfaction, this paper expects to provide references for aboriginal senior high schools to advance teaching and educational equality, and to create a better learning environment for aboriginal student-athletes. A self-completed questionnaire titled “Learning Motivation and Learning Satisfaction of Aboriginal Student-athletes in Aboriginal Senior High School” was employed for data collection. Target samples were 212 aboriginal student-athletes from 6 aboriginal senior high schools located in the counties of Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung during the school year of 2016-2017. 189 valid questionnaires were returned with a response rate of 89%. The following were results obtained from this study: 1. Aboriginal student-athletes have a high learning motivation. “Desire of learning” is considered to be highly relevant while “avoiding pressure” to be the least relevant out of 4 motivating variables, including “desire of learning”, “self-achievement needs”, “avoiding pressure”, and “interpersonal needs”. 2. Significant differences were found in learning motivation among aboriginal student-athletes depending upon ethnic background, academic performance, and intention to enroll in higher education. 3. Aboriginal student-athletes have a high learning satisfaction. Out of 5 variables including ”coach training”, “sports facilities and equipment”, “athletic performance”, “administrative support”, and “learning counseling”, students are most satisfied with “athletic performance” and least satisfied with “sports facilities and equipment”. 4. Significant differences were found in aboriginal student-athletes’ learning satisfaction depending upon the students’ backgrounds. This includes factors such as “county”, “school”, “ethnic background”, “years spent on athletic specialty training”, personal best athletic performance”, “intention to enroll in higher education,” and “athletic specialty”. 5. There is a positive correlation between aboriginal student-athletes’ learning motivation and learning satisfaction. Based on the study findings, the conclusions and suggestions are made as follows: providing more funding for aboriginal senior high schools for sports facilities and equipment; attracting and retaining outstanding coaches; offering the students high-quality education and counseling services; facilitating the students with necessary administrative support and interpersonal assistance; helping aboriginal student-athletes fulfill their interpersonal needs; supporting the ongoing professional development and counseling training of coaches. Hope that this study will provide educational authorities valuable information to plan and manage effective schools that, in the end, lead to all aboriginal student-athletes in aboriginal senior high schools enjoying educational success. |
