Game-Based Learning with Hints or Detailed Answers – A Comparison of Learning Assistance Provided

Because game-based learning is proved to be helpful to students’ learning, can let students immerse themselves in the games, and dramatically help students’ learning achievement. Hence, the study has developed a kind of game-based learning system, “OS game,” and it offers two supplementary tools, hints/detailed answers to investigate the influence of the two tools on students’ learning. The experiment result has found that whether the game-based learning system offers hints or detailed answers, it has notably lowered students’ cognitive load, and obviously improved students’ learning achievement. From learning achievement, the study has further analyzed learning applicability of hints and detailed answers for students with different levels of knowledge, and the result has shown that detailed answers are suitable for students with a low level of knowledge, both hints or detailed answers are fine for students with a medium level of knowledge, and because students with a high level of knowledge have already had very high pre-test scores, giving either hints or detailed answers does not reveal their obvious progress, but giving hints is more helpful to maintain students’ interest.
