Compared with normal teachers, special-education teachers are under more stress and tiredness as they have to face significantly different varieties of students. This study aims to make a real and in-depth investigation into the sources, experiences, feelings and coping strategies of female special-education teachers in primary schools’ parenting stress during their parenting process. Qualitative research method was adopted to explore the parenting stress and coping strategies of female special-education teachers in primary schools. Semi-structural in-depth interviews were made on seven female special-education teachers in primary schools. Five subjects were summarized after subject analysis, namely: overwhelming motherhood as the source of parenting stress; endless burden as the experience of parenting stress; “he who drank it knows whether the water was cold or warm” as the feeling of parenting stress; “the sun shines after the rain” as the coping strategy of parenting stress; “Every cloud has a silver lining” as the magic secret of female special-education teachers in primary schools. The study finds out that parenting stress derives from children, the mothers themselves, their spouses, parents-in law and their multiple roles. The deepest parenting stress comes from the conflicts with their parents-in-law in different educational beliefs, with their husbands in childcare matters as well as with the disobedient kids. The feelings of parenting stress can be divided into such categories as helpless and exhausted, compromising and uneasy, regretted and depressed, exasperated and self-denying. The strategies to cope with parenting stress include: pouring out emotions and sharing feelings with others; getting out of the situation and shift the attitude; getting others’support; seeking for balance point etc. Based on the findings of the study, it brings out the following conclusions: parenting stress sources are multi-dimensional; parenting experiences jointly lead to stress feelings,; parenting stresses are relieved by coping strategies. It is known from the conclusions that there are multiple sources for the parenting stress faced by female special-education teachers in primary schools and parenting stress experiences may lead to negative influences. However, with proper coping strategies, parents can go through the haze of parenting process and enjoy the happiness again. In the end of the study, several specific advises were proposed for parenting education and female special-education teachers in primary schools. |
