A Study on Horticultural Therapy Leaders Teaching and Responding Methods to Elderly People

The aim of this study was to understand the problems, the difficulties, and the responding styles of horticultural therapy leaders in the course of horticultural therapy with elderly people. The research design is qualitative research oriented, and there are six participants in this study. The required data were collected through semi-structural in-depth interviews. The conclusions and the suggestions were provided at the last part of the study. The conclusions of this study are: 1. Horticultural therapy is widely used in elderly people’s learning and it has the functionto effectively bring physical, psychological and social benefits for them. 2. Horticultural therapy leaders’ expertise, techniques and teaching beliefs have gradually been valued and recognized. 3. The difficulties while conducting horticultural therapy to the elderly people are: 1) family-related factors, 2) the leader’s personal teaching style 3) the differences among elder people’s physical and mental abilities, 4) the organizing of the volunteers, 5) insufficient funds for the materials, 6) miscommunications, 7) the professions and qualifications of the leaders. 4. In the course of horticultural therapy with elderly people, the ways of dealing with the difficulties include: active responding/solutions, like designing diversified and creative curriculum, providing trainings for the volunteers, improving communication in the courses and applying evidence-based teaching; passive responding/solutions, like quitting teaching and cooperating with the institution. The suggestions of this study are from the following three aspects: 1. The suggestions to horticultural therapy leaders’ teaching beliefs and professional skills are: 1.1 Keep the confident and professional teaching beliefs, always look for the truth and participate relevant training programs. 1.2 Adjust self-perceptions and arrange activities which elderly people can accept 1.3 Enhance the communications between the horticultural therapy leaders and the organizers. 1.4 Make good use of the environmental-friendly and social resources to make up the constraints of insufficient teaching resources and develop the concept of user charge. 2. The suggestions to the horticultural therapy organizers (facilities) 2.1 To governmental organizer: 2.1.1 Pay attentions to the needs of horticultural therapy leaders and actively provide solutions to their teaching difficulties. 2.1.2 Respect the professions of horticultural therapy and develop national horticultural therapy leader qualification certification. 2.2 To horticultural therapy facility: Make horticultural therapy teaching activities as training programs for the employees, and help the staffs to know more about horticultural therapy for reducing misunderstandings during the process of communications. 3. Suggestions for future studies: 3.1 For selecting the research subject and expanding the research objects: Suggest the future studies expand the research range to wider areas, such as the north, the central, the south and the east of Taiwan or include foreign horticultural therapy practitioners in future studies. 3.2 For research methodology: To use qualitative research method to conduct more in-depth study or to use quantitative research method to expand research dimensions.
