This paper aimed to explore the relationship between online photo-sharing patterns and personality. The research consists of three studies, a qualitative and two quantitative studies. Data in the first study were collected from 41 students. The researchers monitored and recorded their photo-sharing behaviors on Instagram. Respondents then responded to Big Five Inventory to assess their personalities (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness). Based on the results of Study I, the researcher conducted a survey through which data were collected from a new group of 180 respondents in the Study II. The researcher then employed ANOVA to investigate if there were differences between the degree of personality on photo-sharing patterns. Further, due to the exploratory nature of the study, the researcher edited the questionnaire, rephrasing key questions and re-issued a revised questionnaire to another new group of 163 respondents. Correlation analysis was then employed to analyze the relationship between personality and photo-sharing types. In sum, data were collected through photo collection and Big Five Inventory (BFI) in Study I. In Study II, data were gathered from a survey with categorical data types and BFI. In the last data collection period, data were pooled through a questionnaire with 5-point Likert scale and BFI. Results of the research demonstrate a relationship between personality and photo-sharing patterns. Openness and Extraversion were positively correlated with Selfie and Food photo category. Conscientious people tended not to share photos related to entertainment (e.g., Idol and Movie). Neuroticism was significantly correlated with sharing photos on Feeling. However, results from three times of data collection and analyses were not totally consistent. This inconsistency was discussed in the conclusion and may provide insightful suggestions for future research. In sum, results from all of the studies should offer important implications for social psychologists and business practitioners.
