This study is aimed to investigate New Taipei City elementary school English teachers’ perceptions and practices of adaptive instruction and the relationship between such perceptions and practices. It also compares the teaching perceptions and practices among elementary English teachers of different backgrounds. This study surveys English teachers from New Taipei City public elementary schools with a questionnaire and has an effective sample size of 495. The results were analyzed using SPSS statistical software. The data analysis is conducted using descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one way ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation. The findings of the current study can be summarized as follows: Most Elementary school English teachers display a positive attitude toward adaptive instruction and have generally attempted to implement certain adaptive instruction principles in their classrooms, although some of them have encountered challenges during the process. A positive correlation exists between teachers’ perceptions and practices on adaptive instruction, i.e. teachers who support adaptive instruction are more likely to implement adaptive instruction in their classrooms. In addition, the study suggests that teachers who attend more teaching workshops and read more adaptive instruction-related literature are more willing to adopt adaptive instruction strategies, and tend to achieve better results. Nevertheless, the results indicate that teachers do not always reflect their positive perceptions on adaptive instruction in instructional practices. The study finds that students’ individual differences as the most challenging aspect. In general, most teachers believe they need support in implementing adaptive instruction. The study provides pedagogical implications and suggestions for educators and the authorities concerned to help ensure a wider and more efficient implementation of adaptive instruction in elementary school English classrooms.
