The objective of the research is to study the effects of Argumentation Instruction on the fifth grader’s argumentation capabilities. The study employs Quasi-Experimental Design, which takes two classes of fifth graders from an elementary school in Taipei as the subject of research, for a 7-week, approximately 21 lessons of experiment. During the experiment, one class of students were taken as the experimental group and received argumentation instruction, while the other class were taken as the control group and proceeded with the usual Mandarin instruction. The results of the experiment were obtained by having both groups tested before and after the experiment by self-designed test papers. Three statistical methods were employed to analyze the data: 1. One-way ANCOVA was used to compare students’ argumentation capabilities between the two groups. 2. t-test was used to understand the change of students’ argumentation capabilities in the experimental group. 3. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to study the correlation between argumentation capability and gender. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that: 1. Argumentation Instruction has significant influence on the fifth graders’ argumentation abilities. The post-experiment test shows better performance of the experimental group than that of the control group, indicating that argumentation instruction has significant effects on promoting the students’ argumentation abilities. 2. There is no significant difference in the argumentation abilities between boys and girls. Finally, based on the results of the study, the author makes suggestions concerning the applications of the argumentation instruction in elementary schools and suggestions for subsequent studies on the related topics. Key words: argumentation instruction, argumentation ability
