This action research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of applying checklists to self practice for violin beginners. Because of the researcher’s prior teaching experience that students tended to practice unthoroughly at home and thus resulted in the slowing down of the instruction pace and hindered the learning quality, the researcher wished to implement self-developed checklists to help cultivate students’ self-practice habit and solidness. A qualitative study consisting of three cycles was adopted. The pilot cycle was conducted for comparison as being the cycle free of checklists use while the other two cycles involving the use of checklists. A comprehensive synthesis of data was accomplished through analyzing the checklists records, instruction videotaping, interviews with parents and students, the researcher’s teaching reflection log as well as the peer-researcher’s observation journal. The two case violin beginner students were taught to practice the scale, four-note fingering etudes and violin pieces to solidify their fingering in C-major and F-major. The conclusions were drawn based on the study findings: Firstly, regarding the process of checklists usage and the researcher’s reflection, a sense of powerlessness in instruction was felt during the pilot cycle because of students’ habit of careless and unsolid self practice. In the first cycle, students tended to have a better command of curriculum and practice content; besides, they were observed to demonstrate novelty in using checklists and achieve breakthrough in self practice. When it comes to the second cycle, however, the limitation of the use of checklists was revealed in the reduction of checklists effectiveness due to students’ taking the leave in lessons and taking parts in contests. Secondly, in terms of the effectiveness of applying checklists, it was found to be positive in the first cycle because of the novelty effect along with the reinforcing factor of gifts. In general, the effect was not as obvious in the second cycle because of the insufficiency of students practice and the reduction of sense of novelity.
