Dyes are extensively used in diverse industries such as textiles, food, pharmaceutical, paper and cosmetics. The colored wastewater discharged from these industries contains a variety of environmental unfriendly organic compounds and toxic substances. The adsorption process is widely applied because of its low cost and simplicity. Recently, low cost adsorbents produced from agricultural waste byproducts have been considered alternatives for the decolorization of solutions. The feasibility of using rice bran for the removal of reactive dye from an aqueous solution was examined in this study. The effect of different experimental factors on adsorption capacity, such as pH, contact time, initial dye concentratoin and temperature, were also studied. The results show that alkali modified rice bran has potential as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of RB4 from aqueous solutions due to its satisfactory adsorption capacity. The pH had an obvious effect on dye adsorption capacity. The isothermal data of alkali modified rice bran (un-extracted and extracted) can be adequately described with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, respectively. The kinetic study showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was in better agreement with the experimental results. Finally, the problem of the recovery of the adsorbent from an aqueous solution can be overcome owing to the combination of alkali revised rice bran (extracted) with magnetic particles.
