The purposes of this study were to explore after-school activities for sixth-grade students at primary level in school days, and to compare differences between students with different social-economic backgrounds in terms of their attendance of after-school programs, leisure activities, and emotional well-being. Subjects were given questionnaires and they were asked to complete questionnaires in four sections, including investigation of personal information, participation of after-school programs, leisure activities and a learning motivation scale. Sixth-grade students at primary school in Tainan City, in the school year from September 2015 to June 2016 were chosen to be subjects of this study. Three-stage random sampling method was adapted. Thirty counties were randomly selected from Tainan City. In each county, a school was randomly selected. Then one sixth-grade class was randomly selected from each school. The methods of chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, and factor analysis were used to analyze statistics in this study. 500 copies of questionnaires in total were sent to designated subjects and 469 copies have been returned. Questionnaires were returned at the rate of 93.8%. 456 out of 469 questionnaires were valid and 13 questionnaires were left invalid. The findings of this study were as followed: 1. The majority of students were recently attending different after-school programs or courses. The number of students attending after-school programs was fourfold the number of non-attending students. 2. Most students spent their time on recreational activities after school; in contrast, the students who spent their time on knowledge-based activities were the least. Most children attended after-school programs for academic reasons. However, “child care” was the second reason for parents sending their children to after-school programs. 3. There is a significant difference on “desired success” and “control beliefs” between attending and non-attending children. Overall, children’s learning motivations were mostly fine. 4. There is a significant difference on leisure activities among students with different genders, residence statues, and social-economic statues. 5. There is a significant difference on after-school program attendance among students with different genders, residence statues, and social-economic statues. 6. There is a significant difference on the sense of learning motivation between students with different genders, and social-economic statues.
