Popis: | 104 In Taiwan, full-month parties are held to express the blessings of the newborns, and to recognize their social status. In the United States, baby showers are held to celebrate the joys of motherhood, to pass the expertise of it, and to give gifts to the newborns to support the mother-to-be spiritually and materially. Diaper cakes are one of the most common newborn baby gifts in the United States. To make one, pick a theme, and arrange the diapers and baby essentials to look like a cake. A diaper cake demonstrates the American life passion and their pragmatism. During the process of designing the creation, the hand knitting heritage handed down from the researcher’s mother and the profession skills acquired from getting the hand knitting lecturer license were applied. Furthermore, the researcher discovered the diaper cake when she was in the United States, and took this into the creation of the newborn gifts. This creation was used to understand the rites of passage and the meaning of the abstract symbols. To acquire the cultural symbols, the activities and the denotation of the rites of passage were examined to transform and to concretize. Then, a unique style of the local culture was created for Taiwan’s newborn baby gifts. This study attempted to use the rites of passage and the ritual of the newborn as the basis of the ideas. In addition, semiotics, chromatology, and the study of hand knitting were applied, and the way of cultural symbols was adopted to evaluate the work. An exceptional Taiwanese cultural newborn gift was created to enrich the meaning and the value of the new life. The newborn gifts were presented in three series and eight pieces of work. 1. A lavish head-to-toe gift from grandparents: one baby boy “head-to-toe” diaper cake and one baby girl “head-to-toe” diaper cake. 2. An essential gift for friends: one baby boy “bottle” diaper cake, one baby girl “bottle” diaper cake, one baby boy “comfort” diaper cake, and one baby girl “comfort” diaper cake. 3. A token of appreciation in return: a box of glutinous oil rice, and a hand knitting cake. In the cultural and creative industries, this study took on new points of view to integrate the hand knitting into the creation of a diaper cake, and to make an impressive and moving newborn baby gift. Countless attempts were made to offer applicability of the gift, to explore the meaning of the head-to-toe gift, to present the uniqueness of the hand knitting work, to experience the local culture, and to create a work combining the art and the culture. |
