As industries and business developed, raw chemical materials, industry waste or/and wastewater were also brought into the soils. When soil self-purification exceeds its loadings, soils will lose their ability to purify and result in negative consequences on human beings through the transmission of food chain. When facing the deteriorated soil pollution, revelent soil investigation and pollution prevention should be conducted in order to protect the precious land resources. Digestion, a primary quantitative method, is accurate but a relatively high in cost and time consumption approach in deterimining the contents of heavy metals in soils. In contrast, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF) is a lower cost and less time consuming method, which has been widely utilized in recent years. The current study has employed digestion and XRF (sample with pretreatment and without pretreatment) to determine the concentration of eight heavy metals based on tweleve different sites. The results indicated that (1) comparing XRF with digeston method, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cr, and Cu had better correlation while Cd, As, and Hg did not; (2) when comparing to XRF without pretreatment, the value of XRF with pretreatment had a more similar result to digestion method; (3) when comparing concentration of Zn, Pb, Ni, Cr, and Cu in the farmlands and factories, Cr and Ni in the farmlands had better correlation than those in the factories; (4) when comparing to old type XRF analyzer, the value of new type XRF had a more accurate results; (5) when comparing to XRF with pretreatment with digeston method, Zn, Ni, Cr, and Cu in high concentration had better correlation than those in low concentration. The findgins of the current study revealed that applying XRF in screening heavy-metal contents in soils can largely reduce the samples used in digestion method as well as cost and time spent in experiment. It is expected to see that XRF method can be a future trend for development.
