A Study on Characters of Ge-Shin on Traditional Architecture in Taiwan

| Popis: | 104 In expressing the artistic decoration of traditional architecture, Ge-Shin should be the largest framed structure in respect of parallel visual focus with its fabulous and complicated woodcarving story scenes, naturally becoming the place where traditional carving artisans display their skillful crafts. “Character”-themed decorations focus on figures’ appearances and looks or stories and connotations behind them whereby those representative traditions play the function of praying for blessings or education. The study develops along Ge-Shin, as the framed structure in traditional architecture, and explores around characters and stories behind them to interconnect texts of those stories and woodcarving Ge-Shin itself for probing how Ge-Shin uses composition to reflect characters and stories behind them. The 1st chapter briefly introduces Ge-Shin, including its positions, types and functions on “wooden structures” (木作 /mu-zuo/) and “lattice doors” (格扇 /ge-shan/), and then discusses its value and appearance in traditional architecture. In chapter 2, we go deeper to explore Ge-Shin component on lattice door, trying to induce its decorative skills and themes, from which characters and stories behind them are explored further. Most themes come from historical stories, traditional Chinese novel in chapters, myth, tales of mystery, and folklore, etc. All of them play the role of social education through woodcarving Ge-Shin to deliver ethics like loyalty, filial piety, chastity and righteousness to the public imperceptibly. The study puts emphasis on chapter 3 & 4, in which we analyze common characters and stories behind them according to field study result, and categorize those themes into Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Investiture of the Gods and others. Moreover, by analyzing documents, deciphering composition of woodcarving scenes, examining and inducing selection of Ge-Shin’s story scenes, relationship between figures and traditional drama, arrangement of characters, and character combination in a scene, we direct to our research result. In conclusion, we discuss features of Ge-Shin characters and stories behind them in hopes of presenting a different perspective. |
