This study takes the concept of contradiction in logic as the theme, and attempts to understand how Surrealist artists interpret and represent the concept of contradiction. In analyzing the contradiction in Surrealism, this study intends to take the features and techniques of Surrealist contradiction, and applies to the creation of long-distance relationship imagery. In formal logic, a contradiction signifies incompatibility and opposition. This study applies the definition of contradiction in formal logic. The technique of logical contradiction takes contradictory elements and combines them to create a stronger impact and to intensify the theme of the image. Applying the contradictory elements to convey a deeper meaning can generate creativity in the viewers. This study applies literature review and case studies as research methods, and will be focusing on the contradiction that exists in Surrealist art. Surrealism has its roots in the theory of contradiction. The opposition and incompatibility in a contradiction defy formal logic and common sense. And through Surrealism, these features of contradiction can be visualized. This study intends to understand the Surrealist techniques of representing contradiction, and applying them to the creation. The theme of the creation surrounds romantic relationships, in particular long-distance relationships. The creation applies the features of contradiction concluded from the study to depict the uncertainties and negative emotions in a long-distance relationship. In the final creation of this study proves that contradiction creates a strong visual impact and evokes unique emotions and imaginations in the viewers.
