A case study of athletes’ career transition Abstract This study focused on the transition of Taiwan’s athletes’ career through the understanding of two retired athletes with different specialties and career development. It examined three aspects about the career change of the athletes: (a) their reasons to change the athletic career; (b) their plans about the career transition; (c) their mental process of the career change. In conclusion, the results indicated the reasons why the athletes changed their career transition because of personal sports injuries, financial pressure from their family or themselves, or the fading of their original motivation, three of which showed the problems that the athletes faced in reality. Besides, the athletes’ plans about career transition would help them understand the problems they may have when they change to either sports-related or non-sports-related industries. In the end, this study suggested that during the process of career transition, athletes tend to have ambition, determination, passion and positive thinking, to overcome fear of failure, and to accept criticism. Because of experiencing the winning and losing in the sports field, athletes are able to tolerate frustration in different careers. Keywords : Athletes, career, career transition
