Reflection from Accompanying Disadvantaged Teenagers: A Case Study of the Cycling Tour Around Taiwan of Wu Wei Wu

The cycling tour surround Taiwan that Wu Wei Wu held is not just an activity but an alternative learning project for the disadvantaged teenagers and children. The new perceptions that can be carried out from accompanying the teenagers and children include two things: the capability of autonomic learning they get, and, my self restrictions as well as breakthrough of the companionship that I perceive through the conversation with myself. This study is an action-research of accompanying teenagers and children to learn. The research aims to generate reflection and inspiration from the process of planning a long term learning program, the cycling tour around Taiwan, from the perspective of a companion/empowering social worker with the disadvantaged teenagers and children. This case study focused on exploring three points as follows: 1. Exploration into the children’s learning course in the process of planning the cycling tour. 2. Reflections of being a companion/empowering social worker with the disadvantaged teenagers. 3. Inspirations and advices from a companion/empowering social worker with the disadvantaged teenagers. The field of this case study is a thrift shop- Wu Wei Wu. The participants in this study include the act collaborators and the disadvantaged teenagers and children in the rural area. The study was carried out by all kinds of field data, which was collected mainly by observations and interviews. In this study, the second chapter is focused on the learning course carried out by the cycling tour. In the third chapter, the researcher got into conversations with herself and made analyses through the observations, understandings and reflections on the actions according to the pedagogy of the oppressed. The fourth chapter discusses the references about the community education, learning autonomy and alternative education with the learning of the disadvantaged teenagers and children. Next, in the fifth chapter, the researcher recorded the research direction according to the approach of action research. Finally, in the last chapter, the researcher proposed some recommendations for companions/empowering social workers with disadvantaged teenagers and children.
