Popis: | 104 Macrobrachium gracilirostre (Miers,1875 ) is one of the native prawn species in Taiwan. Its body staggered with red and green longitudinal stripes on the carapace and abdomen. Therefore, it is known as "Watermelon Prawn". Their wild populations in Taiwan are rare and suffered also capturing pressure by fishing for ornamental market. Larval culture of Watermelon Prawn is difficult because of its catadromous migration behavior. Wild capture is the main source of the market. The combination of temperature and salinity might affect larval survival and development. Moreover, the each stage of development characteristics for Watermelon Prawn is also determined in order to develop the protocol of larval culture. The results showed that 10ppt has higher survival rates before the fifth larval stage, and faster development in high temperature. Furthermore, the prawn larvae had highest stage of development and longest survival of larvae in 30℃ of temperature and 30ppt of salinity. Characteristic of 12 planktonic stages and metamorphosed into the benthotrophic postlarval stage are recorded in 66 days after hatching. This study can contribute better understanding the early life history of catadromous migratory prawns. Such information is also important for the conservation of Watermelon Prawn population in the wild, moreover providing the reference for catadromous migratory prawn cultures. |
