This thesis describes the history of the Department of Geomatics at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Typically, historical theses are written in either annalistic style, chronicle, or alumni memoir, etc. This thesis attempts to look at the historical events in a different format. We will describe the Department of Geomatics from three different angles, 1) development and historical background, 2) educational practice versus university and industry liaison system (cooperative education), 3) influences on the department from transformation of surveying science and technology. Surveying education at NCKU had a fundamental relation to Professor Hui-Shun Shih and the Department of Surveying at Tongji University, Shanghai, China. And later, the massive domestic demand for construction gave birth to the founding of an independent department. Between decades, students carry out missions and shape vision by participating multiple practice of cooperative education, which also provides funds to the department. Last but definitely not the least, the significant transformation of surveying science and technology after 1960 brought great changes to the department’s staff hiring policy, course management, student sex ratio and eventually the renaming of the department. By further studying the three dimensions, this thesis adapts a new narrative strategy instead of a traditional department history writing, in order to present an innovative viewpoint on the Department of Geomatics at NCKU.
