A Study on the Relationship between Professional Identity and Sustainability Perception of Animal Science College Students in Sweden and Taiwan

The purpose of this study was to explore animal science college students’ professional identity and sustainability perceptions in Taiwan and Sweden. In addition, the present research further aimed to analyze the relationship between professional identity and sustainability perception of surveyed groups in Taiwan and Sweden. A total of 306 survey questionnaires were obtained, representing 12.9% and 11.1% of college students in animal science related departments/programs in Taiwan and Sweden, respectively. To test for associations among students’ personal characteristics, professional identity, and student’s perception of sustainability, two-tailed t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation analysis were conducted. The results of this research showed that animal science college students in Taiwan and Sweden indeed have a strong professional identity to some extents, while personal characteristics demonstrated no significant influence on student’s professional identity. On the other hand, the research findings revealed that animal science college students in Taiwan and Sweden also have positive sustainability perception. Students’ personal characteristics including their gender, nationality, and school of study were proved to be related to student’s awareness of their responsibilities for the solutions of sustainability and their awareness of the relationship between their lifestyle and sustainability. Students’ study major/interest fields were also relevant to the student’s knowledge level of sustainability. This study also proved that animal science student’s professional identity and sustainability perception are related. Graduates from animal science related departments/programs are the most qualified people to become practitioners that have the best knowledge to lead the industry to a sustainable future. In case that how to help and support students to form the cohesion to this field has became ineligible for animal science education institutions.
