Study on the Characteristics of Air-Core Vortex Experiment Using PIV and BIV

Study on air-core vortices on bottom outlet intakes is one of the important topics in hydraulics. The objective is avoiding the air-entrainment at intakes discharging flow which will lead to efficiency loses or structural damages in hydropower stations or cooling stations. In this study, air-core vortex on bottom vertical intake has been investigated experimentally by the three dimensional measurements using three synchronized high speed cameras with Particle Tracing Velocimetry (PTV) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) procedures. By applying PTV with Langrangian method, velocity fields near air-core intake vortex in Cartesian coordinate and Cylindrical coordinate have been obtained, which were not mentioned at all in the other literatures previously. For PIV, three sets of experiments have been conducted, including : (1) Preliminary tests on Hecker Type 1 vortex; (2) Establishment of an experimental method on Hecker Type 5 and Type 6 vortices, having characteristics of the strong whirling air core vortex on the bottom intake; (3) Construction of velocity fields around air-core vortex using a mosaic of several fields of view (FOVs) by deploying the camera under flume of channel. In the third set of experiments, the effect on approaching flow to the characteristics of air-core vortex has been discovered.
