High-brightness light-emitting diode (HBLED) with energy-saving, carbon reduction and long life time, and it has been vest used in luminance devices. The same technology is also adopted on vehicular industry. Due to HBLED has a 30% ~ 40% luminous efficiency, the other energy changed to waste heat, and the headlamp is also located at surrounding of engine room. If the strategy of effective heat design is not found out, it can influence the luminance reliability and used life time. This study uses ANSYS simulation and experiments to explore the heat transfer characteristics of headlamp and the change in surface temperature of the LED. The goal is to improve the heat transfer efficiency to maintain the chip’s working temperature and reliability of the lamp. The experimental results showing, when the environmental temperature is set 22℃ and engine-room temperature is set 80℃, the surface temperature of LED is 118℃, which is over the temperature of specification(100℃). Therefore a heat exchanger must be provided with the outside environment in order to exchange the heat inside the lamp with the outside environment. The improvements include the increasing amount of inlet air, the bending angle of guided channel for air, and the setting flow disturbed devices (cylinders). The analysis results show that the maximum effect can achieve the thermal design goal to let the LED surface temperature be closed to 81℃. Keywords: LED headlamp, guided channel for air, convection transfer efficiency
