A facile method for preparation low cost micro-sized silica was proposed. Micro-sized silica powders were prepared using low cost water glass, ammonia and hydrochloric acid, and then ground by zirconia ceramic microbeads. Micro-sized silica was used the filler of fire-retardant coating for wood. All micro-sized silica samples were amorphous silica. The sample sizes reduced from 2-3 μm to 0.7-0.8 μm by changing the ratio of ammonia to hydrochloric acid and ball milling conditions. The specific surface area was also increased from 162 m2/g to 199 m2 /g. After adding micro-sized silica as the filler, the limiting oxygen index of fire-retardant coating for wood can be increased to 58, which is 2.75 times higher than that of without adding micro-sized silica sample. These results demonstrate the great potential of the combination water glass and ball milling treatment for the preparation of micro-sized silica powders with high surface area and high limiting oxygen index, which makes the obtained silica an attractive alternative to the high costs of silica aerogels.
